This second video in my "Shorter Cranks" series shows how a smaller pedal circle benefits cyclists with hip restriction or impingement. It stands to reason that using shorter cranks means the foot and knee don't travel as far up or down, which gives better clearance at the top of the pedal stroke. But by how much? Will this translate into appreciable improvements in comfort while maintaining performance? I'm on a journey to find ways to make cycling more comfortable and enjoyable for myself and others battling hip arthritis and mobility deficits. It seems that using shorter cranks (I had 175mm, now 160mm) will modify the joint angles and is a great start to this process.
